The question is how do we stay grounded and flourish in 2020?
The “trend” at the moment is ‘self-isolation,’ ‘self-quarantine,’ ‘self-distancing’ and basically just staying indoors. All of this, along with the uncertainty of what’s to come is enough to make anyone fearful and anxious.
When we have lost control over our own lifestyles, it becomes unsettling and perhaps for some unstable.
However, the reality is, we are constantly faced with difficult times in our life- it’s life.
So I want to genuinely ask, how do we just stay centered and flourish in everyday life- in good and difficult times? Let me know in the comments below.
Believe me, I know the feeling, I have been there before-. I went from working, gym, socialising in a busy and main city of Sydney, Australia; to moving to Mexico to a smallish beach town (in Playa Del Carmen) where the community is so small you basically see at least 5 people you know a day.
It had felt that the world had slowed right down. It went from running 100km per hour a day, with little air to breathe to 1km leisurely walks- although this is metaphorically speaking, this could be true.
I had already experienced this mental shift before the world had. I had already been through this essence of “silence.”
I went very inward and felt disconnected. However, the ironic thing was, I was actually reconnecting with my soul.
I was resetting. I was redesigning my life. I became more aware of signs and inspirations that had lead to my rediscovery.
Find the strength, accept change and SURRENDER
What happens when one day, you are confronted with a difficult situation, suddenly everything stops. Most of us are not completely prepared for that.
A situation like ‘coronavirus’ can prove that our fast-paced, jampacked society, can easily shift in a second. The universe is always shifting.
It is up to us to not resist. To accept what is and allow the flow of life.
Change and times where we are obliged to “be still” is enough to make us overthink. The uncertainty can create feelings of anxiety.
Situations can change in a heartbeat. I was supposed to be going back to Australia to visit family but considering the circumstances, I had to accept it and delay the visit back. One day I was organising when I would see my friends, the next day, I was telling them I have no idea when I would be back again.
I guess I had two choices. I could resist and get worked up about the situation or accept it. It does not mean I did not feel sad and upset of course.
It is all in our attitude. Our take on a situation will dictate how our body responds and how we then react in the following events.
It is up to us to find ways of releasing, letting go and enjoying the present.
When we become “quiet,” its amazing how these opportunities of spiritual growth are presented before us.
The interesting part is, these signs or opportunities (from the universe, higher self, inspiration, God whatever you want to call it) are actually always showing up, but perhaps we are too busy to normally notice. Now we can cherish, what these signs are in moments of silence.
So despite the current situation that faces before us in 2020, I want to share my light and perspective on how to stay “calm,” “centred” and flourish in life in general.
1. what are you grateful for?
I talk about this a lot in my other posts.
Gratitude can be easily forgotten about. It is what reminds you of what truly matters in life.
There are things in life we can easily take for granted, and it is easy to get caught up in those situations that may cause us stress.
Taking that time to focus on what you are grateful for, you realise the importance of the more essential aspects of your life.

Today, I am grateful for the fact that I am healthy and happy, I have the chance to dance every day with online classes, learn Spanish online and be with the person that I love.

2. Your body is a temple
Food for thought
We all know that saying- you are what you eat. To me this doesn’t necessarily relate to the physical appearance but how you feel as a whole in terms of your well being.
Think of your food as the fuel for your body. You’re not just feeding your body, your feeding your moods, energy, skin and your mind.
As someone who has been on a plant-based diet for five years now, I feel the most alert, healthier and happier than I ever have.
Eating a plant based diet helps boost your mental health. This is due to the nutrients found in high-quality foods as they contain vitamins, minerals, antioxidants which nourishes the brain and protects it from oxidative stress. Furthermore, eating a healthy diet packed with nutrients, you are promoting self wellbeing and elevating your moods.
Start paying attention to how eating different foods make you feel in the moment.
Feed your body with those leafy greens and colourful fruit and vegetables- eat a rainbow.
Eat healthy snacks such as nuts and seeds, wholesome smoothie bowls packed with vital nutrients your body requires.
Revert to essential oils which are an excellent natural remedy for a range of symptoms.
In terms of reducing stress and boosting your mood here are some of my favourites:
-lavender oil– this has so many health benefits but seeing it is useful as a sedative, this one releases tension. I like to rub lavender oil in my temples when I have a headache.
–frankincense oil– this is a popular one used in aromatherapy. It’s sweet, woody aroma is sedative and leaves you feeling peaceful and diminishes stress, thus enhancing your mood.
We hear this one all the time but I will say it again- drink plenty of water. Flush your body out from toxins and bad energies by staying hydrated. Your skin and immune system will thank you for it.
Drink lots of teas- right now my favourite is cold “Jamaica” as the Mexicans say or “hibiscus flower.”
Who says you need the gym to stay fit?
There are endless amount of apps and channels now to suit every personality and workout program.
Here are a couple of my favourites:
Yoga with Adrienne– I just love her outlook to life and her workouts. She always has an intention and her yoga exercises can suit any level.
YogaGlo– I am so happy I found this. This is like bringing the studio home or to your travels. This is a paid monthly subscription with unlimited access to classes from the industries most loved yoga teachers. You pick and choose the duration and style of yoga- from Hatha, Vinyasa Flow, Ashtanga, Kundalini, there is a style to suit everyone. They also have pilates which is something I love.
The price per month is $18. They also offer a free 14 day trial.
Connect with your loved ones, the people you trust. Whenever you are feeling down, open up and share with the people your network of people. It is completely normal to feel emotions, it is not healthy to constrain them.
We are so lucky to be living in a lifetime where we can connect with people from around the world with a click of a button. I cannot imagine having to wait for that letter for months from a loved one.
So on that note… Right now I am grateful for the fact that I can connect with my family in Australia while I am in Mexico.

5. Engage in hobbies or new activities
Get into a self care routine or a good rhythm of engaging in your favourite hobbies or activities that make you happy.
Especially those ones you have been putting on the back burner.
Start that puzzle you have been wanting to open, cook and experiment with different recipes, learn a new language- right now I am learning Spanish online or reading a new book you’ve always wanted to read.
I am loving ‘The Universe Has Your Back’ by Gabriel Bernstein- she is one inspiring woman.

Connect with nature
Deepen your spirituality and connect or reconnect with nature.
Listen, tune in and without judgement take in every smell, the sounds, the feel. Stop and smell the roses, listen to the waves of the ocean, surround yourself with greenery and plant your bare feet on grass (or ‘Earthing’ as they like to call it).
Be mindful. Feel grounded.
Have you ever noticed how you feel once you are immersed in nature? Every sense is heightened- the nervous system is restored. It brings such joy.
By connecting or reconnecting to the gifts of mother nature, I believe we can truely be at peace in the mind and spirit. Nothing else matters in our space, other than that present moment.
Reconnect with nature – because we are part of it- to it’s beautiful web of life.
6. Create a sacred space through movement and dance
Dance, engage in yoga practises, whatever it is to get your body moving and energies flowing.
When we think of creating a sacred space, we often imagine a place that provides us shelter, peace and security. But the further we journey along the path of self-discovery, the more we realise that sacred space is created within.
Your body is your temple- it houses your mind and spirit. When we dance we are connecting the divine to the world around us. We are connecting with our emotions, inspiration and the physical world.
When we dance, we give our spirit permission to share our deepest inner world out in the present moment. Our dancing bodies can express everything from dreams to passion or fear and can even transmute darkness into light.
Your body is the intersection of the invisible world of thought, emotion and inspiration with the physical world, and it is what connects the divine to the world around us.
Yoga will move you through different asanas or postures that help connect with the spiritual and physical body. By breathing and holding these poses in yoga, we can release tension and open the root chakra.
The root chakra corresponds to the earth element. This refers to the roots that we have planted. It is what keeps you feeling stable or grounded in life which are the basic human needs- food, water, shelter safety, emotional needs. When we feel balanced we feel grounded and safe. When we feel out of balance we feel fear, anxiety, insecurity, unworthiness.
I am a big fan of ‘Yoga With Adriene’ where she guides you the tools of yoga to strengthen and balance the root chakra, the foundation of all the other chakras.

This is a time in our lives to remember to slow down, to reconnect with not only others around you but with your inner self. It is a time to press “reset” and create those sacred spaces to allow your flow and process of rediscovery. It means we need to be reminded to reconnect with our spiritual self.
Life will always throw curve balls at you, it is how you deal with those situations that really matter. From that, creates strength within.
The difficult moments are going to throw every emotion at you, it will feel hard some days and other times it will feel like you have the world in your hands. It just means we need to feel what is arising, to release and let go- in your sacred space.
I want to leave you now with a musical mediation piece that my beautiful friend wrote, for creating divine sanctuary around you. This will hopefully inspire you to feel relaxed, more grounded and centred.
The element of earth, the root chakra, abundance, healing and sanctuary all inspire this music.
